Making Missouri’s New (Ugly) Football Helmet

This offseason, Missouri decided to let Nike do a rebranding number on all its athletic uniforms. Some elements aren’t too bad… like the regular football helmet. (Though I still prefer old gold to yellow and I still like the big M from the old helmet which many Tigers fans hated.) Unfortunately, as SEC fans saw Saturday night, Nike also put together an alternate helmet that a media friend described to me thusly: “It looks like someone shot a black helmet with a yellow paintball.”

Indeed.

The Tiger-head helmet worn on Saturday is no doubt the favorite of Mizzou players as kids tend to like a garish, over-the-top look. Use black or come up with a uni or helmet design that no one else has and it helps with recruiting. Heck, off-the-wall unis often help fire up a team as well.

Well, it turns out Missouri’s paintball helmet — ugly as I personally think it is — isn’t the easiest thing to put together. The MU football program posted a video today showing how the helmet and it’s enormous yellow decal are married. If nothing else, it’s an interesting watch (even if the end result ain’t too pretty).

I would check out this website www.airsplat.com they have great names for airsoft teams so that might give you and idea.

I thought the helmets did a poor job of showing off the Tiger image. In my opinion, it is MUCH too large for the helmet, but could be helped somewhat if the image had an oval around it. While watching on TV, it took me several views and finally a closeup to figure out what the image was. Looked like a leaf or flower at first glance. I have to say, I kind of like the Tiger image, and MU certainly has and will continue to spend a jillion dollars in marketing on it (as they should), but it should be INSTANTLY recognizable at first glance. Doesn't happen in this instance.

Seriously, that helmet is badass. Unis with the stripes grow on you. Other uni good look, too. I just wish they took the oval off the other helmet, just had branded MIZZOU Tiger. Loved the old M (still wear my M hat) and we'll look good in our retro unis, but rage against the machine all you like, this is about the players/recruits.

It was an ugly 2nd half of the 4th quarter. Game was up in the air (MU with the ball and down by 7) until the Jones pick returned to the 1 with 7 minutes left. Trying to block Jenkins and Jones with 2 freshman, a former walk on and both tackles playing out of position proved to be an impossible task. Good thing MU has 5 OL coming in the next year. They'll need them against the UGA, LSU and Bama..

If MU wants to talk about ugly they need to mention the dog whippen they took in the second half of last weeks game against UGA.

@vcoile Did you happen to watch the game? Perhaps they were "Jonesing" but otherwise I'd call it self-flagelation.

@buddha22 I take it that you're one of those guys that never gives credit where it's due. If you lose, the other team wasn't better, you just beat yourself. Am I right or am I right?

It's only going to be worn for one game. If MU could've held on Saturday night, they could wear them for every game for all I care. The other new helmets are fairly benign anyway. Better than the old block M, in my opinion.

My suggestion is to win a few SEC games and put the focus on the team and off the uniform.

Agree with John - the alternate helmet is garish and ugly. Not a good way to enter the tradition-bound SEC with a gimmicky, juvenile look.

The helmet looks good in still photography. On the field it looked like a black helmet struck by yellow paint balls. Speaking of having something bite you in the ass...how 'bout them Dawgs?

Although I tend to agree that the traditional style unis are best, I really didn’t dislike this one. At the very least, it’s leagues better than Georgia’s awful Mighty-Morphin’ Power Ranger uniforms last year.

Yeah, but those unis were so horrible that if the bar is set there... anything would look good in comparison. Pink and orange polka dots would look better than those. I felt for UGA fans having to watch their beloved team in those comic book duds.

It's horrible, and I say this as a Mizzou alumnus and decades-long season ticket holder for Tiger football.
