After re-reading my comments, if any clarity was needed, my criticism was clearly aimed at an individual’s poorly thought out comments and an emphasis on athletic performance over hyperbole, not towards the team whatsoever.
Let’s hope this feeling of “disrespect”, that Mizzou can’t compete in the SEC, is turned into a positive motivator (which it should be!) for the team to embody the spirit of “Show Me” on the field because no matter what is said, that’s the ultimate gauge. I can’t wait to see this game in person and I think Missouri can win this game as well as be competitive (and consistently win) in the SEC. M-I-Z!!!!!!

One thing I have learned about the SEC brand of football is that a lot of SEC fans are quite a bit more sensitive than I have seen in other leagues. This is one player who is confident about his team going into the next week’s game. He’s probably speaking for many others on his team who are sick of hearing about this mythical game played in the SEC that is unlike any other. It’s just talk, but I like where his head is at going into this week’s game. M-I-Z!

They can keep their SEC Banner at home, we have many ourselves including SEC logos marketed on the field, video board, stadium flag pole, etc. (BTW, you do realize MU is in the SEC, right? This isn’t an “us vs them”) His dig was at Georgia’s style of play, not the SEC with the “old” comment. Regardless, if UGA needed that comment to get up for this one they are already in a world of hurt. I do agree though, if you want to talk the talk, be ready to back it up. Sheldon has had his first real off season with the team and is looking like the 5 star MU originally recruited, so now walk the walk Big Shel, you got their attention!

Great article. I teach freshman composition at UMKC (part of the MU system) and I love the humorous breakdown of the language. As an MU fan, I’m happy we in the SEC have MrSEC. It’s the best college football writing on the web in my opinion. As for the appropriateness of Sheldon’s comments, I think they’re wonderful, though I’d probably have sited UT, A&M, OKST, before TECH as credible BIG 12 opponents. And yes, I’m going to take his intent with the “old man football” as “old school”. The former makes no sense

Mizzou will do all right and so will UGA in this one. Should be a good game, but as a Gator, not going to be pulling for the Dawgs just because of a couple of comments by one player, so the “entire SEC” pulling for the Dawgs this week? Nah.

Welcome to the SEC Mizzou and help Sheldon put a sock in it and lets spend the next few days focusing on the game (okay, that’s a pipe dream, but thought I would throw it in anyway)..

As a Mizzou Alum I think that Sheldon’s comments were ill-timed and not very thoughtful. I believe the pressure & hype of being in the SEC is affecting the players & coaching staff. The no respect mantra is wearing thin. Let’s win at least 1 SEC game before the trash talking starts.

As Richt asked, “did he say old school”, because there is a difference between old school & old style. The former is a compliment.

Injuries & suspensions are not acceptable….btw Mizzou is without their top rusher Henry Josey, who’s out the entire year. He ignited Franklin & the offense last year, but we can’t use that as an excuse.

Finally most SEC-schools were pulling for UGA beforeRichardson’s comments (except USC, Fla, & Tenn for obvious reasons).

@MissouriAlum As the famous Georgian, Louis Gizzard once said, “DAM brother!, I don’t believe I would have told that”. He does not speak for the team, the University ,are the State of MO. He is young and I am sure does not know the that much of George’s rich history of football, but he will learn, I just hope not the hard way like most lessons of youth. I do think we are going to surprise some of our new SEC brethren but his mouth is getting way ahead of his talent. Lets wait until the game is played and see where you stand.

Imbecilic. Look, Mr. 5 Star has a history of letting his mouth function before his brain. If I were him, I’d be dramatically more focused on improving his 3 Star athletic performances and shifting it more towards that 5 star ranking. His moving mouth is in no way, shape or form reflective of the typical (rational) Missouri fan attitude and frankly as a Missouri Alum, it’s embarrassing to be associated with such thoughtless hyperbole. I want to see all “talk” on the football field with measured performance.
