I too think Dooley will last one more year for a couple of reasons. First, his current contract will be up, plus he took on an assignment that would be almost impossible for any coach. I believe the only way Hart will make a change this year will be if he can recruit an established name. The UT fans are tired of hiring coaches with "potential". With our facilities, resources and fan base, we expect to at least hire a proven commodity. I don't see Petrino coming this year but, next year, maybe. I think Hart would catch too much flack for hiring Petrino at this point, albeit not as much as hiring an unproven coach.. Hart is not the most popular A.D,. so how he handles the football situation will make or break him as well.

If I were UT, I would also be looking at Charlie Strong and I would definitely take him over Petrino. Petrino has proven that he will cost you more than he's worth in the end. He'll win for a time, but it will end badly. Dan Mullen is another good name.

And sometime soon a major program is going to come calling for Kirby Smart and it will probably take a major program for him to leave the situation he's in. If you're Kirby why entertain jobs at mid-majors or at traditionally weak schools...no reason to take that risk. If a major program doesn't offer him a job then he might as well wait it out at Alabama until Saban retires. Smart is still pretty young so there's no reason for him to be impatient.

@HoustonVol Dantonio would be a great hire for anyone in my opinion. He does have a better record than Saban at MSU, but he is also coaching in a weaker era for the Big Ten than what Saban had to deal with. He's still a proven winner though. Dantonio also worked for Saban at MSU and I know Saban has great respect for him.

Fun fact: Dantonio actually played college ball at South Carolina.

My number one vote (and was three years ago) for TN is Mark Dantoni from Michigan State. Having a rough year, but has won more than anyone in decades at MSU, including St. Nick. Don't know if you could pry him out of MSU, but that would be a great hire and someone that has a track record of winning. He might be willing to leave for the same reason St. Nick left - there is a ceiling to MSU. With Hoke building Michigan back up, MSU will become second fiddle in the state again real quick.

As an Alum of Tennessee, my vote is no on Patrino. I think Hart will take the same stance. One item you forget to mention in you summary of Patrino. Patrino opened up the athletic department to discrimination lawsuits, and other violations of federal and governmental policy. It appears that the AD has been able to smooth everyone over and avoid lawsuits on the matter. However Hart is already dealing with lawsuits from merging the departments. Would he really want to bring in someone that is currently a magnet for a lawsuit? If Patrino looked at someone the wrong way, the sharks would be circling. I still think, baring an implosion, Dooley has at least one more year.

I understand that instant recognition and football credibility can drive revenue, excitement, ticket sales...however, can Tennessee really afford to take the Petrino risk on the heels of alienating half of their fan base over Fulmer, hitting rock bottom with boy wonder and then using Dooley as a scapegoat? If he pulls one of his stunts on rocky top, as only he can, he could set them back twenty years. Get in trouble with the NCAA in the process, and the second most successful program in SEC history could end up floundering for decades like Notre Dame. Huge risk.
