@JamesKeith This is just the 1st two phases. The south end zone has been discussed as the next step and that will add considerably more seating.

The reason for the MU/UM thing has nothing to do with the Big 8: the entire University system, which includes Mizzou, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and University of Missouri-Kansas City, is known collectively as the “University of Missouri” system. Mizzou is the flagship, but it’s actually known as Missouri University. That’s the distinction between the entire system and the flagship campus.

I knew that all the Big 8 schools put the U at the end of their abbreviations, but I’d never heard that it was a league mandate. Just a silly little aside. Many thanks for the explanations here (and in our inbox).

All the old Big Eight schools used the initial of their state first: MU, KU, OU, CU, NU, etc. Back in the early part of the 1900s, our university was commonly known as Missouri University, and Kansas University and the others were similarly known. So it became MU. The moniker has stuck even though today the formal name is University of Missouri.

OK, some history. Originally, the University of Missouri was referred to as UM. However, the Big 8 Conference decided to institute a rule whereby all members would have the “U” at the end of the abbreviation for consistency. At that time, the University of Missouri became MU. The Big 8 all had the “U” at the end — KU, KSU, CU, ISU, OU, OSU, NU, and MU. So, same as the University of Oklahoma is known as OU.
