I was in school at Alabama in 1988, Thomas' senior year. He had 27 sacks. In what Musberger called the greatest single defensive effort he had ever seen, Thomas helped us beat Penn State 8-3. Two of the points were from his safety. I have been watching and attending Bama games all my life, and I have never seen one individual dominate another team defensively the way he did that day. It was something to behold. He was everywhere all at once.

I don't know much about him in college... but I loved watching DT at Arrowhead back in the 90's. Really one of my all time favorite players and the only Chiefs jersey that I own bears his name on the back... RIP.

As a Chiefs season ticket holder I dearly loved watching Derrick hunt QBs at Arrowhead. His personal life was a mess by many standards, but he was never characterized as a mean spirited person and was always willing to lend his fame to worthy local events. Hope he makes it for his children's sake.

Is there a stipulation, understood or stated, that personal character is a criterion? There could really be no other reason that Derrick Thomas was not a unanimous first ballot choice. I tend to wish for character to count, but when putting together a sports hall of fame it can be a slippery slope. Does a DUI arrest trump four marriages? Not shooting at anyone, but you get my point.
