File this one in the “no duh” category. Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema addressed his team’s quarterback situation yesterday afternoon, saying that Brandon Allen will start against Texas A&M this weekend… if his bruised throwing shoulder is given a clean bill of health from team docs.
“If (Allen) at any point, even if it’s not until Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, says that he can go and the doctors give him 100% we’ll go in that direction,” the coach said. “If not it will be, obviously, AJ (Derby) again and Austin (Allen) as his backup.”
That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for Derby, the juco transfer who’s completed 18-of-32 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown filling in for Allen the last two weeks. Derby’s has been a fine game manager (one TD pass, no interceptions), but he’s not been able to create big plays through the air (a 5.41 yards-per-attempt average) to help open up the Arkansas running game. The run game suffered last week in a loss to Rutgers. The Razorbacks mustered just 101 yards rushing on 34 carries.
