pat dye should look in the mirror when giving advice. only a COWARD calls kids cowards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pat Dye is back in the news. The ex-Auburn coach who was pilloried last month for stating that Condoleezza Rice doesn’t belong on the new college football playoff selection panel, spoke at a Tennessee booster club in Knoxville yesterday. What he said is making headlines again.
Knoxville News Sentinel sports editor Phil Kaplan tweeted a quickie roundup of Dye’s comments:
A zinger at Arkansas coach Bret Bielema. A real smackdown of Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace, Auburn’s leading passers a year ago. And another mention of Condoleezza Rice.
Interestingly, I received a phone call yesterday from someone in attendance at that meeting who told me what Dye had said. He also told me that Dye asked that a television camera in the room be turned off, clearly not wanting his words to come back to haunt him. In this era, Dye should have known his words would go straight to the internet.
The caller and I wondered how long it would take for Dye’s words to get out anyway. As expected… not long.
In fairness to Dye, from what I was told, he questioned a number of people on the selection panel, not just Rice. In mentioning Lt. Gen. Michael Gould, the former superintendent of the US Air Force Academy, Dye wondered why the former coach at Air Force — Fisher DeBerry — didn’t get the nod over a former pilot. He wants football people on the committee. But anyone who dares question the selection of Rice will be hammered as a sexist old coot. And if you question others as well, that won’t make headlines. Only the Rice stuff makes headlines.
The old coot.
Update: Gus Malzahn responds to Dye’s quarterback comments. ”Of course I recruited all the quarterbacks here and they’re nothing but champions.”
