Cats Roll Wake Forest, Earn Berth in Sweet 16

Darius Miller scored a career-high 20 points and top-seeded Kentucky made easy work of No. 9 Wake Forest during a 90-60 rout Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament. It was the second blowout in two games for the Wildcats (34-2), who crushed East Tennessee State 100-71 in their opener. Miller scored 16 points in the first half to help the Wildcats build an early double-digit lead that ballooned beyond 30 in the second half. DeMarcus Cousins added 19 points for Kentucky, while John Wall scored 14 and Eric Bledsoe 13.

Kentucky Cruises Past ETSU, Advances to Second Round

Eric Bledsoe’s eight 3-pointers set a Kentucky record for an NCAA tournament game, and the top-seeded Wildcats dominated throughout in a 100-71 victory over East Tennessee State on Thursday night in the first round of the East Regional. Scoring 29 points in all, Bledsoe started 8 of 8 on 3s before finally missing his first from long range late in the second half and finishing 8 of 9. Still, he surpassed Tony Delk’s previous school record of seven 3s in the 1996 championship game against Syracuse.

The University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari, one of only two multiple Naismith winners, is among four finalists for the 2010 Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club Thursday.

The Wildcats make their NCAA record 50th NCAA Tournament appearance after claiming the Southeastern Conference’s automatic berth, winning the 2010 SEC Tournament. UK posted a dramatic come-from-behind 75-74 overtime win over Mississippi State in the championship for the program’s 26th SEC Tournament championship.

Kentucky Makes 50th Appearance in NCAA Tournament

After claiming its 26th Southeastern Conference Tournament title and posting its NCAA record 12th 30-win season, the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team (32-2) will make is NCAA leading 50th appearance in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the East Region, it was announced Sunday night. Kentucky will play East Tennessee State (20-14) Thursday, March 18 in New Orleans, La.

Kentucky Downs Mississippi State in Overtime for SEC Tourney Crown

John Wall scored seven of his 15 points in overtime, and No. 2 Kentucky rallied from five down with 2:28 left in regulation to beat Mississippi State 75-74 on Sunday for the Wildcats’ 26th Southeastern Conference tournament championship. The Wildcats (32-2) blew earlier chances with their fabulous freshmen Wall and DeMarcus Cousins missing free throws and making youthful mistakes. But they came through at the end as Cousins’ layup off Wall’s missed 3-pointer from the right corner beat the regulation buzzer to give them some extra time.

For the 34th time in program history, the Wildcats advance to the title game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. UK is 25-8 in the championship game, but will be making its first appearance in the title game since 2005.

Cats Thump Tennessee, Advance to SEC Tourney Finals

DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and No. 2 Kentucky beat 15th-ranked Tennessee 74-45 Saturday and advanced back to the Wildcats’ accustomed spot in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship game. Kentucky (31-2) will play either No. 20 Vanderbilt or Mississippi State on Sunday, looking to add a 26th tournament title to the 44th regular season championship the Wildcats won in coach John Calipari’s first season. Eric Bledsoe had 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, and John Wall added 14 as Kentucky chases its first tourney title since 2004.

Kentucky Advances to SEC Tournament Semifinals

For the 37th time in program history, the Wildcats advanced to the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. UK is 34-2 in semifinal games, but will be making its first appearance in the “Final Four” round of the conference tournament since 2006, coincidentally in Nashville.

SEC Champs Have Earned First Round Bye in Tournament

For the 16th time in the 19 years since the SEC expanded, Kentucky enters the SEC Tournament with a first round bye. The Wildcats earned the East’s number one seed by posting a 14-2 record in league play, including an 18-0 record at home. In doing so the Cats wrapped up their 44th SEC Championship.

Kentucky Rallies, Defeats Alabama to Advance to SEC Semifinals

John Wall had 23 points, including seven straight in the second half to give the Wildcats the lead for good, and No. 2 Kentucky overcame an 11-point deficit Friday in beating Alabama 73-67 in the Southeastern Conference tournament quarterfinals. The win gave Kentucky its 12th 30-win season – the most by any school – and the Wildcats’ first since 2003 when they went 32-4. Kentucky (30-2) will play either No. 15 Tennessee or Mississippi in the semifinals Saturday looking to add a 26th tournament title to the 44th regular-season championship.

Balanced Attack Leads Kentucky Past Florida

Darius Miller and Eric Bledsoe had 14 points apiece and No. 3 Kentucky withstood a Florida comeback with a 74-66 victory Sunday, completing an 18-0 home season and likely cementing its hold on a top seed in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats (29-2, 14-2) had already clinched their 44th Southeastern Conference title outright with Vanderbilt’s loss to South Carolina on Saturday night. Florida (20-11, 9-7) may need to win a few games in this week’s SEC tournament in Nashville, Tenn., to reach the NCAAs.

Cats Earn Share of SEC Title with Georgia Win

John Wall had 24 points and No. 3 Kentucky clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship by beating Georgia 80-68 on Wednesday night. Patrick Patterson added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who scored the first 12 points of the second half and maintained control from there. Wall hit three 3-pointers to help the Wildcats shake their recent shooting slump. The star freshman added six assists and three steals. Kentucky (28-2, 13-2 SEC) moved one game ahead of Vanderbilt in the race for the league’s best record. The Wildcats, who swept Vanderbilt, already own the tiebreaker and the top seed in the SEC tournament.

After clinching a share of its 44th SEC Championship on Wednesday against Georgia, the Wildcats go for the title outright on Senior Day Sunday against Florida. The Cats claimed the title after an 80-68 win at Georgia led by Patrick Patterson and John Wall.

Kentucky’s March Madness Begins at Georgia

The Wildcats go for a share of the SEC title again as they travel to Athens and go for a season sweep of the Georgia Bulldogs. Kentucky needs one win to wrap up a share of its 44th SEC title. UK just missed an opportunity to stake its claim on the championship at Tennessee on Saturday. Down 19 points in the second half, UK mounted a furious rally, tying the game at 65-65 with 2:09 left, however the Cats fell 74-65.

Kentucky Comeback Falls Short at Tennessee

J.P. Prince had 20 points and Scotty Hopson added 15 and No. 19 Tennessee snapped No. 2 Kentucky’s eight-game winning streak with a 74-65 victory Saturday. It was the second major upset of a highly rated program this year for the Volunteers (21-7, 9-5 Southeastern Conference), who also knocked off top-ranked Kansas last month. The Wildcats (27-2, 12-2) had trailed by 16 midway through the first half but managed to tie the game at 65 before Prince and Hopson scored the final nine points to clinch the victory.

Patterson Scores 23 as Kentucky Rolls South Carolina

Patrick Patterson had 23 points and No. 2 Kentucky avenged its only loss this season with an 82-61 victory over South Carolina on Thursday night. The Wildcats (27-1, 12-1) need just one more victory or a Vanderbilt loss to clinch at least a share of their 44th Southeastern Conference championship. Vanderbilt beat Georgia 96-94 in overtime Thursday, delaying the Kentucky celebration for at least another game. Like its last meeting with Kentucky a month ago, South Carolina (14-13, 5-8) proved a pesky opponent until near the end. However, Kentucky had too much offensive firepower, and its defense gave up 26 points to the SEC’s leading scorer, Devan Downey, but little else.
