Strong Second Half Propels Cats Past No. 23 Notre Dame

Terrence Jones scored 27 points and No. 17 Kentucky avoided its first losing streak under coach John Calipari with a 72-58 victory over No. 23 Notre Dame on Wednesday night in the SEC/Big East Invitational. Jones had been chastised by Calipari for taking a pregame nap before a loss to North Carolina on Saturday, a game in which Jones scored just nine points on 3-of-17 shooting. The freshman forward had no such problems against the Irish. He made 9 of 18 shots – including a huge 3-pointer with just over 2 minutes left – grabbed 17 rebounds and added some late free throws for Kentucky (6-2).

Kentucky Falls at North Carolina

Tyler Zeller scored a career-high 27 points and hit the go-ahead free throws with 47 seconds left, helping North Carolina edge past No. 10 Kentucky 75-73 on Saturday. Zeller scored 12 of the final 16 points for the Tar Heels (5-3), who earned a needed victory against a big-name opponent after struggling the first month of the season. John Henson added 13 points and 12 rebounds, giving North Carolina its sixth win in the past seven games against the Wildcats (5-2). Freshman Doron Lamb had a season-high 24 points for Kentucky, though he missed a desperation running heave for the win a few steps within halfcourt as time expired.

Kentucky Rolls Boston 91-57 With Strong Second Half

Brandon Knight scored 23 points and No. 10 Kentucky bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 91-57 win over Boston University on Tuesday night. Terrence Jones added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (5-1), who shot 59 percent from the field and overwhelmed the Terriers (4-4) over the final 20 minutes. Kentucky led by just seven points at halftime before opening the second half on an 18-3 run to break things open. John Holland led the Terriers with 20 points but Boston U. shot just 29 percent and had no answer after the Wildcats shook off a sluggish first half with perhaps their best basketball of the season.

UK Returns Home to Face Terriers

UK posted a 3-1 record on its four-game road trip, earning victories over Portland, Oklahoma and Washington en route to a second-place finish at the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Kentucky Falls to Tennessee

Tyler Bray threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns as Tennessee extended its winning streak over Kentucky to 26 straight games to become bowl eligible with a 24-14 victory on Saturday. Denarius Moore caught one of those touchdowns and had 205 yards receiving. Kentucky (6-6, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) tied the game at 14 with 10:10 left in the third quarter when Mike Hartline hit Tyler Robinson on a 2-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1. The Wildcats got the ball back on the next drive when Bray threw an interception to Mychal Bailey in the Kentucky end zone.

Kemba Walker scored 29 points and Connecticut beat a Top 10 team for the second straight day, knocking off No. 8 Kentucky with an 84-67 rout to win the Maui Tournament on Wednesday night. Connecticut (5-0), the 2005 Maui champions, wore down second-ranked Michigan State in the semifinals and steamrolled the Wildcats with a massive run to close the first half. Alex Oriakhi had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Huskies shot 57 percent against one of the nation’s best teams to leave paradise with a big trophy and bigger expectations.

Terrence Jones had 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Brandon Knight scored 24 points to help No. 8 Kentucky hold off No. 13 Washington 74-67 in the Maui Invitational semifinals Tuesday night. A 4.7 earthquake centered on the Big Island shook courtside tables and chairs with about 6 minutes left, but play continued and few people in the gym seemed to notice. They were too busy watching the back-and-forth action. Kentucky (4-0) had an abysmal night from 3-point range – 3-for-17 – but smothered Washington on the perimeter defensively and came up with all the big plays down the stretch. The Wildcats move on to the championship game against Connecticut, which knocked off No. 2 Michigan State in a rough-and-tumble first semifinal.

Cats Advance with 76-64 Win Over Oklahoma

Freshman Terrence Jones dominated inside on his way to 29 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 8 Kentucky held off scrappy Oklahoma 76-64 in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Monday. The 1993 Maui champions, Kentucky (3-0) and its fabulous freshman looked dominant at times, racing out to big leads on a couple of occasions. The Wildcats also were careless at times, nearly blowing all of an 18-point lead as Oklahoma (3-1) fought its way back. Kentucky finally pulled away over the final 2 minutes, going up 70-62 with just over a minute left when Jones blocked a 3-point attempt by Cade Davis and scored on a breakaway dunk.

Randall Cobb ran for a career-high 170 yards and two touchdowns as Kentucky surged past Vanderbilt 38-20 on Saturday. Cobb had touchdown runs of 5 and 73 yards to help the Wildcats (6-5, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) become bowl eligible for the fifth straight season. He finished with 279 total yards, breaking the school record for all-purpose yards in a single season in the process. Derrick Locke ran for 145 yards and two scores in his first game in a month and quarterback Mike Hartline threw for 232 yards and a touchdown in his final home game.

Kentucky Cruises Against Charleston Southern

Mike Hartline finished with 272 yards and two touchdowns, and Kentucky pulled away from Charleston Southern 49-21 on Saturday. The Buccaneers tied Kentucky 14-14 with just less than 6 minutes left in the second quarter but Kentucky rallied with two touchdowns before halftime. Kentucky (5-5) won its 19th consecutive non-conference game, a streak dating back to 2006. Randall Cobb finished with 101 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Cobb has scored or passed for a touchdown in nine of Kentucky’s 10 games this season.

Freshman forward Terrence Jones had 23 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks to lead No. 11 Kentucky to a 122-54 win over Dillard on Friday night in the Wildcats’ final exhibition game. Jones sleepwalked through Kentucky’s first exhibition, a 97-66 win over Pikeville on Monday. He had nine points and seven rebounds, but he shot poorly and spent much of the game in foul trouble. But in 30 minutes Friday, he had only one foul and shot 10 of 13 from the field. Freshman point guard Brandon Knight finished with 20 points and six assists.
