Mallett’s Scooter Drawing Laughs

An LSU fan has started an internet sensation add music to and then posting video of Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett tooling around the UA campus on a device designed to protect his surgically-repaired left foot.

Mallett is well aware of the video, too. He’s been emailed about it several time.

“You’ve got to take it with a grain of salt. There’s going to be people from other teams putting it on the internet. A million people have sent it to me in my email. I just laugh every time. It doesn’t get to me or anything.”

As you can see in the video, the contraption Mallett is having to use is a bit odd looking.

Mallett is off his feet and out of full football action for the next couple of months while his broken foot heals. Mallett is still able to throw.

He expects to be back to full speed by July. Until then, he’ll just be ridin’ dirty.

4. There are no concerns about Mallett packing on pounds due to his injury.

5. LSU basketball player Dennis Harris won’t miss any games, but Les Miles is still waiting to rule on the arrest of football player Terrance Toliver.

6. Toliver was tasered not once, but twice following his “fistic encounter” over the weekend.

SEC fans, we want to know your thoughts on some of the SEC’s hottest topics. And we’re launching some new gadgetry today to allow you to share your feelings with us.

Every so often, we plan to put feedback widgets on our team pages, just to gauge the mood of those schools’ fanbases.

Today, we start with widgets on four different pages. Each has a question specific to that page’s school:

Alabama — Will the pressure to repeat hurt Alabama next year?

Georgia — Do you feel good about the hire of Todd Grantham?

Mississippi State — Do you have a problem with Strippergate?

Tennessee — Did Tennessee reach in hiring Derek Dooley?

All you have to do is go to your school’s page and answer the question. That will help us get a good idea of what fans from each school think about different school-specific topics.

Each week or so, we’ll move the feedback widgets around. So each fanbase will have a chance to talk about their favorite school.

In addition, we plan to use this technology to do some Q&As with all of you in the days ahead.

The Latest On Tennessee’s Search

Interim head coach Kippy Brown is getting his chance to interview for the full-time gig today. Was that the original plan or has Mike Hamilton finally just thrown up his hands and turned to the in-house candidate?

Dave Hooker of The Knoxville News Sentinel has put together a list of possible candidates for the job at this point.

Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com tosses a little cold water on the Lovie-Smith-to-Tennessee talk.

In doing a number of radio interviews this week, I’ve been asked numerous times why Tennessee’s job is such a hard sell right now. This piece was posted a couple of days ago, but it’s a solid summary of the combination of issues facing UT.

And you can add to this mix the fact that Lane Kiffin left behind quite a few well-paid assistants who must either remain on the new coach’s staff or be paid by Tennessee if they’re fired and do not land new jobs. As we said earlier today (in this piece), most coaches want to hire their own staff.

If the term “perfect storm” ever fit any sports situation… it’s Tennessee’s current one.

SEC West Headlines – 1/15/10

1. James Willis has officially left Alabama for Texas Tech.

2. This writer plays “5 Questions” with Tide hoopster JaMychal Green.

3. Auburn is a 30-to-1 shot of winning the BCS title next year. (The list includes all the SEC schools.)

4. Jeff Lebo’s team scored just 18 second half points in an 81-55 loss at Tennessee last night.

5. The mess Ed Orgeron left behind — at Ole Miss, not Tennessee — will cost the Rebels three scholarships this year.

6. Ole Miss has rescheduled the Grove Bowl spring game for April 17th.

7. Arkansas had no answer for Jarvis Varnado as the Bulldogs pulled out an 82-80 win last night.

8. Varnado blocked 10 shots last night and should be able to break the NCAA career record for blocks by late-February.

9. The Bulldogs suffered no letdown after their win over Ole Miss last weekend.

10. Arkansas couldn’t stop Varnado from scoring, rebounding or blocking shots.

11. Les Miles is going to demand more of himself and his program. (Whatever that means.)

12. In basketball news, Tasmin Mitchell is more concerned with wins than recordbooks.

13. The Tigers are making some bad decisions on the court.

Vol Coaching Search A Laugher

The official website of Air Force Academy football has posted a statement from coach Troy Calhoun.

“We are more than grateful and proud to be closely involved with the character building of our cadets and the mission of the United States Air Force Academy. We are diligently recruiting and working with our team to prepare for the upcoming season. We look forward to coaching and being a part of the Air Force Academy team both on and off the field in 2010.”

Just a statement? A definitive, “I’m not going to Tennessee” comment?

You decide.

Either way, the joke of the SEC on this the 14th day of January in the year of our Lord 2010 is the University of Tennessee athletic department.

If Tennessee has been turned down by Jon Gruden, Will Muschamp, Troy Calhoun, et al… it looks bad.

If Tennessee has simply been trying to be cute with smokescreens while chasing David Cutcliffe (David Cutcliffe?)… it looks bad.

At this point, it would require a real Hail Mary hire for Tennessee to come out of this thing looking good.

Georgia and Florida fans must feel pretty good about their coaching issues right now. They’re in fine, fine shape compared to Tennessee.
