Around The SEC East – 1/12/09

Here’s your news from the SEC’s East Division this morning:

UF:  Steve Addazio might not be Florida’s new offensive coordinator after all.  Boston College is now eyeing Addazio for their head coaching position.  “It’s a serious thing,” said Urban Meyer.  “We’ll know more about it here int he next few days.”

Sidenote — so schools looking for head coaches are interested in just about everyone on UF’s staff BUT Charlie Strong.  Wonder why?

UF:  With Tim Tebow returning, the talk in Gainesville already centers on repeating as SEC and national champions.

UF:  If you, like me, assumed that Brandon Spikes would be heading to the NFL… think again.  Rumors have him returning in 2009.  That would mean that all 11 starters from UF’s defense would be back.  Good Lord.

UF:  Percy Harvin has said that he’s leaning toward returning, too.

UF:  Tight ends coach John Hevesy is leaving Florida to join Dan Mullen’s staff at Mississippi State as his offensive line coach.

UF:  “You’ve got to be out of your mind if you don’t want to play for the Gators.”  That’s what Urban Meyer said after winning another national title last week.  Mike Bianchi of The Orlando Sentinel believes the coach should apply those comments to his own continued “dream” of one day coaching Notre Dame.

UGA:  The Bulldog basketball team has given up 42 offensive rebounds in their last two games.  That’s not a real good way to win ball games.

UK:  Linebacker Micah Johnson is returning to Kentucky for another year, but the jury’s still out on cornerback Trevard Lindley and defensive end Jeremy Jarmon.

UK:  On the basketball front, Kentucky finally got some help for Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson in their win over Vanderbilt.

UK:  John Clay of The Lexington Herald-Leader isn’t convinced.  In his view, Saturday’s win “boiled down to 10 good minutes against an opponent minus it’s best player.”  Mr. Clay believes the Cats will have to do better to get a win in Knoxville tomorrow night.

USC:  Steve Spurrier continues to fill out his coaching staff.  Harvard’s Craig Fitzgerald (yes, Harvard) has been hired as the Gamecoacks’ new strength coach.  He’ll join Eric Wolford (offensive line) and GA Mangus (quarterbacks) who were hired last week.  USC is still waiting for word from Arkansas’ secondary coach Lorenzo Ward.

USC:  Darrin Horn was happy with the homecourt advantage fans provided his team against Auburn on Saturday.  Too bad the Gamecocks play at LSU and at Tennessee this week.

UT:  Tyler Smith knows what Kentucky’s Perry Stevenson will bring to the floor tomorrow night.  “I know exactly who he is.  He played some great D on me last year, and I didn’t get off to a good start against that guy in either game.”

UT:  Some unpopular guy in Knoxville writes that in regards to the Vols’ assistant coaches’ salaries, “Tennessee isn’t baking the world’s biggest pie.  Tennessee is just slicing their pie differently than other schools.”

Vandy:  Without all-conference center AJ Ogilvy, the Commodores had no post threat against Kentucky this weekend.
