Around The SEC East – 1/7/09

Here’s what’s making news around the East Division of the SEC on this Wednesday morning:

UGA:  Is there any good news in Georgia today?  The rival Yellow Jackets from Georgia Tech rallied in the second half to best the Bulldogs 67-62 last night.  The loss drops Georgia to just 9-6 on the season.

The game was just bad basketball according to Jeff Schultz of the AJC.  Try a combined 34% shooting for both teams.  “… jump shots are making those sounds usually reserved for old Chevys hitting lamp posts.”  Great line.

During the game, highlights of Tech’s football win over the Bulldogs were shown on the arena’s video board.  Tech fans cheered lustily at halftime when a star football player was honored at midcourt and finished his remarks by yelling, “To hell with Georgia.”  Presumably he meant the school, not the state in which everyone was standing.

Oddly enough, there was a tornado watch issued outside Alexander Memorial Coliseum last night, but there was none of the magic that UGA used to win the SEC tourney there last March.

UK:  Sunday’s loss to Louisville showed Billy Gillispie exactly what needs fixing on his team.  And transition defense is at the top of the Big Blue To Do List.

USC:  After two years at Illinois under Ron Zook, Eric Wolford has been hired by Steve Spurrier to coach the Gamecocks’ offensive line.  Wolford will also serve as Carolina’s running game coordinator.

UT:  In late November, Tennessee and Gonzaga were riding high when the Bulldogs beat the Vols at an Orlando tournament.  With a rematch scheduled for tonight in Knoxville, UT is wobbling after recent losses to Temple and Kansas… and Gonzaga has dropped three out of four.

UT:  If the Vols are going to beat Gonzaga tonight, they’ll need to actually show up on defense.  “While I’m disappointed — and I’d say very disappointed — I’m not surprised (with the Vols’ lack of defense),” said Bruce Pearl.  “My plan has stayed exactly the same.  If I were to read any criticism or hear any criticism about our basketball team, most of it’s true.”
