In terms of news from Columbia, we start with Joe Person of The State who provides a juicy notes column that covers all of the following:
1) The Outback Bowl still looks like the Gamecocks’ holiday destination. 7-5 and playing on New Year’s Day. Nah, there aren’t too many bowls.
2) Steve Spurrier wasn’t happy to fire offensive line coach John Hunt. Didn’t want to do it… felt he owed it to him. (Name that movie.) “We’ve got to try to make some changes and make something better happen. That’s of this coaching business. It’s no fun. But you just have to do it sometimes.”
3) Spurrier wasn’t pleased with the play of some of his juniors against Clemson. Might they have their eyes on the NFL?
4) Tommy Beecher, who was supposed to be the starter this year but had a horrible first outing, got hurt, and went into a shell, is now running the scout team for Carolina. He will make the bowl trip even though he’s unwilling to play. “That’s okay,” said Spurrier. “Football’s not for everyone.”
The only concern for the Outback Bowl seems to be whether or not Cock fans will travel to support their team following two bad losses.
Spurrier still doesn’t sound too happy with Lane Kiffin and David Reaves. Reaves was Carolina’s recruiting coordinator until Sunday, but he’s already left a message for prospect Jarvis Giles on behalf of Tennessee. “Sometimes ethically some coaches say, ‘Well, I was recruiting you for over there. But one of our other coaches is going to recruit you now that I’m here.’ But really they just (say), ‘You should have come there, but now you should come here.’”
