FLORIDA FOOTBALL NOTES – 8/6/08

A couple of stories on freshman defensive lineman Matt Patchan today.  One from The Orlando Sentinel and one from The Gainesville Sun.

Patchan, of course, survived a gunshot wound to his shoulder this May.  He says he was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Jeremy Fowler of The Sentinel says fans should expect a lot of line-up experiments this week.

Freshman Will Hill is focused on winning the starting strong safety role with the Gators.

This practice notes column reveals that Tim Tebow threw two interceptions yesterday (and somewhere, angels are weeping)… and Percy Harvin had to sit out again with a limp and a nagging heel injury.  So much for being ahead of schedule.

Florida’s most glaring weakness continues to be their thin secondary.  But as we wrote in a new stats column yesterday, if you’re going to have a weakness, the secondary is the best place to have it.

Robbie Andreu of The Sun provides some insight into what he’s seen at practice so far this week:  cornerback Joe Haden looks to have improved, Hill will be a “big-time playmaker,” the coaching staff isn’t worried about the tailback position, and more.

This notes colum reveals that Urban Meyer is putting more emphasis on “team” and “unity” to his squad this year, and that the offensive line is already missing numerous players due to injuries.

Finally, Florida will be one of five teams in the nation to get their own Sports Illustrated cover for the magazine’s 2008 season preview (photo at left).
