Georgia Willing To Pay Capel $2M? Evans Isn’t Saying

Much of the chatter regarding Georgia’s head coaching job has connected back to VCU coach Anthony Grant.
But athletic director Damon Evans was having to answer questions about Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel yesterday. Specifically, whether an internet report that he was willing to pay Capel two million dollars per year was true.
“I don’t know where things like that come from. I guess it’s just the nature of the beast. I stand by what I said when we made the announcement (of Dennis Felton’s dismissal), that it won’t be appropriate for me to comment specifically on anything concerning the search process until the time is right.”
Capel makes $1.05 million at Oklahoma and his contract runs through 2014.
Roger Clarkson of The Athens Banner-Herald believes the rumors of Georgia’s interest in Capel make sense. That said, it’s still probably a longshot that Georgia can make a big enough to financial splash to steal Oklahoma’s coach.
The Sooner athletic department is more than willing to throw money around to keep their coaches.
