One news story, one “sources say” and one rumor to mention this afternoon:
Tennessee
The deal that brought Kippy Brown back to Tennessee as the team’s receivers coach and passing game coordinator is three years in length and will pay Brown $300,000 per year.
The Vols had the highest paid assistant coaching staff in the conference last year and Brown’s salary is $130,000 per year more than previous receivers coach Frank Wilson (now at LSU) made last year.
Georgia / Alabama
Sources have told the site FootballCoachScoop.com that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is now back in the mix for Georgia’s DC job. According to the site, “Smart is now leaning towards joining Mark Richt’s staff after” the BCS title game.
It seems that everyone has their own version of the Georgia-Smart talks. I’ve spoken to two people in Athens since last week. One says Richt offered the job to Smart and was turned down. The other says that Smart never showed enough interest to be offered the job in the first place.
Now, the story changes again… at least according to the folks at FootballCoachScoop.com.
Smart is a Georgia alum and perhaps the Bulldogs are ready to give him a serious pay upgrade (over the $360,000 he makes with the Tide). At the same time, if Smart’s ultimate hope is to become a head coach, how would accepting the Georgia job get him any closer to realizing that goal?
Mississippi State
Finally we come to the rumor. And if it’s true, you can bet that Georgia fans will have a good laugh.
Former Bulldog defensive coordinator Willie Martinez (fired by the Georgia this season) is reportedly high on Dan Mullen’s list to replace Carl Torbush (who left for Kansas). In fact, one tipster says that Mullen and Martinez are talking today.
