SPURRIER AIN’T READY FOR THE JUNKYARD YET

According to this story which ran in Columbia’s “The State” (which still sounds like the name of a Soviet-era propaganda sheet), Steve Spurrier isn’t ready to walk away from the game again… and he isn’t giving up the decision-making power on the offensive side of the ball.

“I will oversee all the playcalling.  I’m still the offensive coordinator.  In fact, I plan to spend more time with the quarterbacks and the offense this year than maybe I have in three years.”

Steve Spurrier, Jr., it was announced earlier this year, would handle play-calling duties.  It would not surprise me if Spurrier gives, then takes back play-calling powers two or three times during the season… just as he’s juggled his quarterbacks over the years.

As for the rumors of burn out or retirement, the ol’ ball coach doesn’t sound tired.

“Everybody talks about how, ‘This guy’s in his 60s.  He’s going to walk away from this thing.’  I feel just as good as I did when I was in my 40s.

“Physically, I’m the same as I was in 1990 right before I coached my first year at Florida.  That age thing’s a funny thing.  But I feel a good five more years easy.  I really do.  I don’t know what else I’d do.”

He could’ve added, “I still feel like a new Corvette.”

In the same column, Spurrier also talks a good deal about Carolina’s quarterback situation.
