The SEC’s Best Receivers… Against Other SEC Teams

We’ve looked at passers and rushers, now we turn our attention to the SEC’s best pass-catchers.

As before, we’ve lopped off the non-conference numbers and focused in on the numbers put up during SEC games only.

We found that just 11 players recorded more than 400 receiving yards during the SEC’s 48-game regular season.  Below you’ll find them listed according to their receiving yardage total.  You’ll also find their total number of catches, average per catch, average per game, and total touchdown receptions listed.

Observations:

* Florida (WR Cooper and TE Hernandez) and LSU (WR LaFell and WR Tolliver) were the only schools to have two pass-catchers tally 400 yards a piece in SEC play.

* Green and Adams both played in just seven conference games, which explains why their yards-per-game averages are higher than players who tallied more total yards.

* Green and Hodge made the coaches’ All-SEC first-team.  LaFell and Julio Jones made the coaches All-SEC second-team.  Can someone explain to me how Childs didn’t make the coaches’ (or the AP’s) All-SEC team at all?  From a numbers standpoint, no one else even came close to his production in SEC games.

* Alabama is heading to the national championship game with a perfect 13-0 record, so it’s hard to nitpick.  But Julio Jones really didn’t get many opportunities in SEC play, did he?

* Not a bad freshman season for Carolina’s Jeffery.  Against SEC defenses he put up 609 yards for 17.9 yards per catch and pulled in five scores to boot.  It will be interesting to see how he and Stephen Garcia develop further next season.
