Urban Meyer and Utah: Not a match made in SEC heaven

Florida

Add this latest zinger to Urban Meyer's growing list since December. Most of what Urban Meyer says is going to be in the headlines anyway because of his status in college football, but he also knows how to make a few waves.

It started with calling Notre Dame his "dream job" in December, followed by an April challenge to Gators fans who are against the program to sit in seat 37F (possibly a dig at former Gators quarterback and radio host Shane Matthews, who was critical of Urban's offense after the Ole Miss game). Since then, he has twice denounced the Notre Dame job that many predict he will one day take and, as of this week, expressed how he doesn't think Utah, his former school, "can survive the grind of the SEC," as colleague Andrea Adelson points out this morning.

I don't mind the honesty here. He's probably right. Last year's Utah team would have been a good SEC team, but a 5-3 SEC team — probably not enough for a BCS bowl. But perhaps that's not the point. I wonder if Urban thought after the fact about how his words could have hurt the BCS stock of a program he appears to care deeply about.

The Mountain West's playoff push could use Urban's affirmation, but Urban and the rest of the SEC coaches know they've got too sweet of a deal to want anything else than the current system.
