Quarterback Gunner Kiel from East High School in Columbus, Ind., will play football at Notre Dame.
Kiel had been committed to LSU since Dec. 27 but didn’t show for an early enrollee meeting in Baton Rouge on Monday. That led to reports that he was having second thoughts about his decision to attend LSU.
Kiel’s family appears to have played a role in Kiel’s change of heart, according to Michael Scarborough of TigerBait.com.
“He wants to come to LSU, but his mother (Aleta Kiel) got very emotional Monday and did not want her son to leave,” Scarborough said, per USA Today. “He plans to enroll in classes at Notre Dame on Tuesday.”
So is the decision being made by Kiel or his family?
“What has been relayed to me is that he wants to come to LSU but his parents want him at Notre Dame because it is closer to home,” Scarborough said.
If true, this would be disappointing. Too often we find stories of prospects not being able to make their own decisions for their future. This might be another example.
UPDATE - Notre Dame has made the signing of Kiel official.
“Coach (Brian) Kelly was great throughout my recruitment, as many times out our conversations had nothing to do with football,” Kiel said in a statement released by the school. “That really showed me he had my best intentions in mind. He was persistent yet also patient while recruiting me and I look forward to playing for him the next four years. I couldn’t be happier to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team. I’m excited about the future of the program.”
