U.S Army Bowl Recruiting Wrap-Up

The SEC was very involved on Saturday when prospects at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio were announcing their college decisions.

Georgia received the news it had been waiting on when athlete Damian Swann from Atlanta committed to the Bulldogs. The announcement on Saturday probably came easily for Swann.

It’s been my decision for about a month,” said Swann, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “I wanted to do it out here so I had to keep it a secret for a while. But I’m glad to finally get it off my chest.”

Dee Hart made a similar move. The running back from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla., gave a public commitment to Alabama. The news wasn’t a big surprise considering his friend and teammate, Alabama commit Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix, mentioned Hart’s commitment to the Crimson Tide earlier in the week.

Hart switched his commitment from Michigan to Alabama.

“Because of the Michigan coach change, plus coach (Nick) Saban and I got a good relationship,” Hart said, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Alabama’s in-state rival, Auburn, had an even better day at the U.S. Army Bowl. The Tigers landed commitments from athletes Kris Frost and Brent Calloway, who switched his commitment from Alabama to Auburn.

I just weighed out my options and I feel more comfortable,” Calloway told Rivals.com. “I felt more comfortable running the ball and I looked at the depth. I looked at all the aspects you’re supposed to look as an athlete going to a college and to make a life decision for four years. After I weighed out everything, it was Auburn. It feels right for me.”

Alabama has recruited Calloway to play linebacker. His preference, however, appears to be to play running back in college. Auburn will give him that opportunity.

He hardly played any defense this season,” Scout.com recruiting analyst Andrew Bone told The Birmingham News. “He really likes running the ball and had over 2,000 (rushing) yards this season.”

LSU received a commitment from athlete Odell Beckham Jr. from Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans. Beckham could play offense or defense for the Tigers.

“I’m much better with the ball in my hands,” Beckham told Rivals. “It’s really going to be whatever the coaches need. If they need me at DB, I’d play DB.”

Beckham’s commitment wrapped up a solid weekend in recruiting for LSU. Baton Rouge running back Jeremy Hill, who recently visited Auburn, re-committed to the Tigers on Friday.

The 2011 class for Ole Miss received a boost when wide receiver Tobias Singleton from Madison (Miss.) Central High School committed to the Rebels.

Singleton, who’s considered the nation’s 12th-best receiver by Rivals, is the 26th commitment for Ole Miss in 2011.

Dan McCarney’s departure part of reason for Jeoffrey Pagan’s decommitment

Florida
Content provided by Swamp Things – Gators Blog.

Four-star DE Jeoffrey Pagan decommitted from Florida on Monday, changing his mind in part because of the departure of defensive line coach Dan McCarney for North Texas.

Danny Wilkins, Pagan’s high school coach at Asheville (N.C.) High, said, “I think he’s concerned about the distance from home a little bit more as time approaches, too, for signing.”

The Gators had honored their offer after Pagan tore his PCL and MCL earlier this month. He has since had surgery under the direction of Dr. James Andrews, one of the most renowned sports surgeons in the country.

“His knee’s doing much better,” said Wilkins. “It was not as severe as they thought. He’s in rehab and doing well. And they expect a full recovery.”

Pagan’s decommitment leaves Florida with 17 recruits in the 2011 class. They are:

Final Thoughts on South Carolina at Arkansas: The Upcoming Weeks Should Be Spurrier’s Last Chance

I usually use my Sunday afternoon posts to discuss strategy, specific performances, and the like. I’m sure there’s still a lot to be said in those regards about the abortion that occurred last night. We could chat all day about how stupid the fake punt call was, whether we should have run the WildCock, or which DB is having the worst year. However, I’m going to forego that issue and get down to brass tacks: we got whipped so badly last night in our house because our team didn’t want this game badly enough. (Notice that I’m not saying that we would have won with better effort; Arkansas is a good team, and what good effort would have equaled would have been a close game that could have gone either way.) Is there really any other way to explain it? There was no focus, no execution, and no fire. And simply put, that’s unacceptable. This team has more talent than perhaps any team in Carolina history, and they’ve shown us that at moments this year. The sky has been the limit for this team, and yet here we are, staring down another late-season collapse. It’s simply baffling that we didn’t get a better performance from the team last night.

The evidence of a lackadaisical performance is everywhere to be found. Our receivers, many of them proven talents, couldn’t catch well-placed balls. We gave Garcia no protection, and we got the usual performance from him when that’s the case. Marcus Lattimore had no room to run. Ever. (Lattimore is one of the few players that get a pass in this regard; as always, he fought for every yard he could get.) Maybe the worst aspect of the performance from an effort standpoint was our tackling. Our DBs looked tentative for most of the game and declined to put big hits on Arkansas’s runningbacks. You can complain all you want about the “dirty” hit laid on Connor Shaw at the end of the game, but one thing’s for sure: Arkansas’s defensive players came to Columbia ready to lay the wood and make plays. Our guys came hoping that our offense would bail them out again. Just an atrocious performance all around.

This kind of game shows you that somewhere, there are serious problems in this program. I’m not sure where to place the blame, but ultimately is has to go on Steve Spurrier. He’s the man at the top. He sets the tone, hires the position coaches, does all the things that should equal better play than what we got last night. And if he can’t get this team in gear to round out the season in a positive manner, we need to cut ties. I don’t say this lightly. Anyone who follows this blog knows that I love Spurrier and think he’s done some nice things for this program. But this is it, folks. This is the year when we have the talent and many of the other teams that usually give us trouble don’t. If Spurrier can’t win some key games now, why should we expect that he ever will?
