Report: Napier To Replace Groh At Alabama

mrsec-breaking-newsBilly Napier is leaving Florida State to become the wide receivers coach at Alabama, according to a report from Noles247.com.

Napier will replace Mike Groh, who’s leaving for the Chicago Bears, according to the Noles247 report.

Napier’s decision to leave Florida State comes less than two months after his arrival in Tallahassee. He was hired as Florida State’s tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator on Jan. 15.

Napier, who served as Colorado State’s quarterbacks coach in 2012, was the offensive quality control coach on Alabama’s 2011 staff. He previously served on Clemson’s staff from 2006-10.

Napier, widely regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiter, will be filling big shoes in that area. Groh was recently named the Rivals’ Recruiter of the Year after he helped Alabama sign such highly-touted prospects as defensive linemen Dee Liner and A’Shawn Robinson and running back Altee Tenpenny.

Napier was twice recognized by Rivals as one of the nation’s top 25 recruiters during his time at Clemson.

Tide Recruiting Continues To Roll

Alabama enjoyed another successful day in recruiting on Monday when it received a commitment from defensive end Tim Williams from University of Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, La.

How strong is Alabama’s recruiting right now? It was Alabama coach Nick Saban who gave the approval for Williams to commit to the Crimson Tide.

“Coach Saban said he wanted me to go ahead and commit,” Williams told BamaOnline.com. “It was the overall program and how they will utilize me on the field. I like the way they develop their players and the academic program.”

Williams, who projects to play linebacker at Alabama, joins a Crimson Tide 2013 commitment list that includes defensive end Jonathan Allen and cornerback Maurice Smith.

Alabama is still pursuing several highly-touted defensive prospects, including safety Vonn Bell, linebackers Reuben Foster and Matthew Thomas and defensive end Dee Liner, who de-committed from Auburn on Monday.

Liner No Longer Committed To Auburn

Defensive end Dee Liner from Muscle Shoals (Ala.) High School has de-committed from Auburn.

“I’m going to make my decision on signing day,” Liner told AuburnSports.com. “I had to do what’s best for me and I appreciate what Auburn is and has done for me. I appreciate them, I just have to do what’s best for me. I appreciate all the Auburn fans.”

Liner said he will no longer consider Auburn but is taking a look at the Tigers’ top rival.

“Alabama is one of my favorites,” he said, “but my de-committing from Auburn has nothing to do with Alabama. I just didn’t feel comfortable with the (Auburn) coaching staff. I’ve been holding it in, I just had to get it off my shoulders.”

The loss of Liner is a significant one for Auburn, which holds 14 commitments for the class of 2013. Liner is ranked the nation’s No. 22 overall prospect by Rivals.

Liner’s decision could cause a familiar feeling for Auburn fans, who saw running back T.J. Yeldon switch his commitment from Auburn to Alabama just before he enrolled in school last spring. Yeldon rushed for 1,108 yards and 12 touchdowns while helping Alabama win the BCS championship this past season.
