Rebels Lose Assistant McGriff To NFL’s Saints

WESLEYMCGRIFF150With spring practice just around the corner, the SEC’s coaching carousel is supposed to be still and silent by now.  But on Monday, somebody gave the thing another big spin.

Hours after it was learned that Tennessee would lose running backs coach and solid recruiter Jay Graham to Florida State, Ole Miss also took a hit.  And the Rebels also lost a good recruiter.

The New Orleans Saints announced late yesterday the hiring of Wesley McGriff, Mississippi’s cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator last year.  As a recruiter, McGriff led UM’s efforts in landing 5-star prospects Robert Nkemdiche and Laquon Treadwell.  Rivals.com named him as one of the 25 best recruiters in the nation for his work.

McGriff will serve as the Saints’ defensive backs coach.  Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze will now begin his search for McGriff’s replacement.

SEC Prospect Tweets Photo Of Self, Girls, Bong

Last Wednesday we wrote “When will they learn?” after Ole Miss commitment Laquon Treadwell posted online a photo of himself and several hundred-dollar bills shortly after making his recruiting visit to Oxford.

Well, apparently no one’s learned anything since Wednesday.

Georgia native Davin Bellamy posted a photo of himself, two other prospects, four girls, and a bong that was snapped during his recent visit to Oregon.

Bellamy told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

“We were leaving some apartments, and a couple of girls wanted to take a picture with us.  So we were in their room for like 30 seconds.  I didn’t even know the (bong) as in the picture.  After I tweeted out (the picture), I started getting all kinds of text messages.  Then I looked closely at the picture, and I was like ‘What?’ I deleted the picture, but it was already out there…

I told (Oregon’s coaches) the story, and that none of the football players had anything to do with it.  It as just some girls I was taking pictures with.  I guess the girls were using it before we got there. It was just there on the table.  It is what it is…

They understood.  But… these girls on college campuses, they probably know more about the recruits than the coaches do.  Once they saw me, they wanted to take pictures with me and the other recruits.  But like I said, the coaches understood.  It wasn’t in a football player’s room.  It was just girls that wanted pictures with us.”

Right now there are four University of Oregon students telling their parents, “It wasn’t mine, it was my roommate’s!”

Why people feel the need to post online every photo taken of them (ego) is beyond this writer.  But as long as kids feel the need to post pictures of themselves, there will continue to be photos of recruits with cash, bongs, and Heaven knows what else.

Bellamy says that Georgia is still his leader, but Oregon has pulled into a tie for second with Tennessee for the defensive end’s services.  So congrats to the fast-rising Ducks and their old “hot chicks with bongs” ploy.

For those who don’t know what a bong is… let’s just say this Paul Harvey ad is a lot more entertaining than that long farmer/truck spot from last night’s Super Bowl:

UM Commitment Treadwell Making News Thanks To Photos

SEC Fan Truth #128:  If my favorite team is having a good year on the recruiting trail, they’re doing so in complete accordance with all NCAA rules and bylaws.  If another team — especially a rival — is having a good year recruiting, they’re cheating like the dirty nogoodniks they are.

And into that cauldron photos of Ole Miss commitment Laquon Treadwell have been tossed.  Photos of Treadwell with hundred-dollar bills.  Photos of Treadwell with two girls a’kissin’ on him.  Photos, photos, photos.

The pictures briefly appeared on his very own Instagram account — he’s yet another high school dimwit, if true — before being deleted.

Some claim the pictures were taken during Treadwell’s recent visit to Oxford.  A visit he seemed to enjoy if you believe his Twitter account:

Now guess how many Mississippi State fans have emailed the MrSEC.com inbox about this story today?  Yep, dozens.

“Why aren’t you covering this!!!!!!!!!!”

Oops, sorry, left off a few: !!!!!!!!!

In reality, if Treadwell did post the photos below it still doesn’t prove that anyone associated with Ole Miss gave him a single, thin dime.  It looks suspicious as Hell, you bet, but it’s not proof of anything.

What it should be is reason enough for the NCAA to pick up a phone and call both Treadwell and the University of Mississippi’s compliance office.  That is if the NCAA has the time to break away from its investigation into itself.

We’ll see what comes of this one, if anything.

But at the very least, it appears Treadwell is the latest kid to stupidly post incriminating photos of himself online.  Oh, when will they learn?
