Don’t expect Carl Lawson to choose a college too far from home.
The defensive end from Milton High School in Alpharetta, Ga., has been committed to Auburn but reopened his recruitment since Gene Chizik was fired as head coach in November.
Auburn remains in the picture along with Ole Miss, Tennessee and Clemson. Lawson’s teammate, running back Peyton Barber, is committed to Ole Miss and has put in a good word for the Rebels.
But Oxford, Miss., is more than a six-hour drive from Alpharetta, which could be a problem for Ole Miss in its pursuit of Lawson, according to Lawson’s father.
“When Carl was in Florida, his mom and I started to get the feeling that he doesn’t want to be too far from home,” Carl Lawson Sr. told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s probably going to be some place 4-5 hours away from Atlanta, tops.”
Auburn, Tennessee and Clemson would all qualify under that prerequisite.
Lawson will take a visit to either Clemson or Tennessee this weekend, according to his father. And Auburn will likely receive a visit before signing day.
Lawson is being recruiting by Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner, who left Georgia for the Tigers last month.
“What’s at issue is whether they can build a successful relationship in a short amount of time,” Lawson Sr. said. “They have to build some chemistry and get to know each other. There’s no doubt that Auburn’s new staff is very impressive.
“But what is good for Auburn might not be good for us. I’m not saying the two are separate, and I applaud what (head coach Gus Malzahn) has done with his staff.”
