Earlier today we announced Missouri’s Alex Oriakhi as our MrSEC.com “Defensive Player of the Year.” Now, after crunching a few different numbers we’re ready to hand out our “Offensive Player of the Year” Award to Arkansas’ BJ Young.
Young is the first two-time winner of the award (which is slightly less impressive than it sounds because we’ve only given out the honor the past two years).
As was the case with our defensive award, we wanted to base this honor on statistics and data. Once again we focused on the 51 SEC players who logged 800 or more minutes of action in 2012-13. We tallied the total number of assists and offensive rebounds for each player. We tallied the number of made field goal attempts. We also wanted to account for the added value of made three-point attempts, so each made trey gave the shooter a bonus of .3 points. (Example: 27 made three-point shots would equal 9 bonus points in our formula.) Those numbers were added together and referred to as positive plays.
The final step was to divide the total number of minutes played by the total number of positive offensive plays attributed to each player. When the cyphering was complete, Arkansas’ Young was one of only six players to make a positive impact on offense at least once every three minutes. Young’s official number was a good offensive play once every 2.66 minutes.
We know full well that this is only a snapshot, but it’s our snapshot. If there were a statistic that showed, for example, the number of good screens set by a player we would have included it. But not every stat is kept. So we picked the ones we found to be the most important and used those. We’re certain that other would use a different formula, but this is ours.
Below you can see each player’s statistics and minutes/positive play ratio:

* Arkansas actually had two of the top three offensive players in the league in Young and Marshawn Powell, both of whom ranked in our top three.
* Missouri (Phil Pressey and Oriakhi), Ole Miss (Murphy Holloway and Marshall Henderson), and LSU (Johnny O’Bryant and Charles Carmouche) also had two players each in our top 10.
* The highest-rated Mississippi State Bulldog was Craig Sword at #27.
