UT’s Lathers Probable, Neal Now Just A Co-Starter, And Dooley Teaches MrSEC.com A New Word

Love him or hate him, it must be said that Derek Dooley gives good press conferences.

From his “Germans at Normandy” speech to his “watering bamboo” analogy, Tennessee’s coach always manages to come up with something entertaining or unique.

Today, he revealed a couple of actual news items before using a word that yours truly had never heard before.

First, Vol linebacker Herman Lathers — who left Friday’s win over NC State with a shoulder injury and had an MRI over the weekend — is considered “probable” for UT’s game with Georgia State this weekend.  Dooley said, however, that he would only play if he’s healthy enough to practice this week.

Second, Rajion Neal is no longer the stand-alone starter at running back for the Volunteers.  A three-headed monster now sits atop the list with Neal, Marlin Lane and Devrin Young all listed as co-starters.

Ah, but while speaking of Lane, Dooley said: “Marlin struggled a bit (in fall camp) and it could have been easy for Marlin to get the mulligrubs.  That’s how it is in sports.  You just keep sawing wood.”

Okay, I’ve heard the sawing wood cliche numerous times, but mulligrubs?  I can honestly say in 41 years I’d never heard of the mulligrubs.  So I looked it up.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, mulligrubs can mean either a) a despondent, sullen, or ill-tempered mood or b) a griping of the intestines.

Here’s guessing Dooley was going with meaning a.
